Five Types of Love

In the English language, the word “love” captures multiple emotions that are related yet are experienced very differently. For example, the love that you have for your romantic partner is different than the one that you have for your child, and you love your favorite sports team in a way that is different than the way you love your family.
It can be helpful, therefore, to look at the different ways that the Greek language breaks down these types of love.
Specifically, it is important to know that when we talk about love in the context of nonviolence - loving our enemies, etc. - we are not talking about the kind of love you have for your friends and family. It is an entirely different kind of love we are working to cultivate.
